Dear Parent,
I am painfully aware of the experience that many special education children, and, families live with. Special Education is not sitting by your child assisting them with endless difficult homework, a child sitting in class unable to remember or unable to focus, or, having the IEP shut you down. This was my experience.
School psychologists say potential is what their tests will tell you. IEP tests said I would never ride a bicycle, play a musical instrument or graduate high school. I do all of them. The school psychologist told me I was a “four-cylinder Chevette,” and accepting a mediocre path would make life easy for me.
At my high school graduation, the Principal came to me and said, “Your Classmates are going to Harvard and Yale, but you will be my success story.” Just like my Principal told me, each one of my Clients is my success story. After that I decided I would become an Attorney to do all I can to open doors and plant seeds of a meaningful future for children with disabilities. Everyone told me it is not possible. Fortunately, I ignored their advice. Over 27 years ago I received a Masters Degree from New York University and a Juris Doctorate from the University of California. I am also a graduate of the Trial Lawyers College. I took the road less traveled and it made all the difference.
As an Attorney I help children with disabilities reach their true potential every day. The IEP team will not mention many solutions that will make a big difference, but I see children receive them all the time and watch them grow.
I look forward to hearing your story.
